We MUST STOP criminalizing the teaching of Palestinian history

Folks,

California Assembly Bill 715 will become law on New Year’s Day, and it represents one of the most cynical acts of education suppression our state has ever seen.

Disguised as a response to antisemitism, this law will criminalize teaching Palestinian history, intimidate educators, and restrict what students can learn about liberation struggles, occupation, and genocide.

Antisemitism is very real and extremely dangerous. We must be vigilant and ready to stamp it out wherever it appears. Jewish communities–like other targeted identity groups–deserve safety, dignity, and protection from hate.

But AB 715 does nothing to advance those goals. It exists only to silence dissent and criticism of occupation, apartheid, and genocide.

Every leading Democrat in this governor’s race has lined up behind AB 715, and even the leading Republican candidate stands with them.

Both corporate parties are complicit in genocide, and in concealing the truth from our youth.

If nothing changes, nothing changes. We need YOU to support the only candidate unafraid to speak truth to the Israel lobby. We need YOU to support the campaign that understands that the struggles of working people in California and the struggles of Palestinians are one.

Educators across California are warning that this law will create fear in classrooms and restrict how teachers address history, politics, and current events.

As a teacher myself, I know what it means to stand in front of students with a responsibility to tell the truth, to provide context, and to trust young people to think critically.

That is why educators and parents have filed a lawsuit to stop this law, and why this campaign stands in solidarity with them.

As governor, I will move to repeal this law and defend academic freedom across our public schools. And I will ensure that antisemitism is confronted directly rather than cynically weaponized.
