The party of “progress” says: live in your car.

Friends,

California Democratic lawmakers just introduced a bill that would allow students to legally sleep in their cars on campus.

A graphic with a headline from Politico: “How bad is California’s housing crisis? A first-in-the-nation bill would let students live in cars. The Democratic proposal comes as the party looked to focus on cost-of-living issues.

Yes, you read that right. In the richest state in the richest country on Earth—this is what our so-called leaders call a solution.

Not housing. Not protection. Not justice. But permission to survive in a parking lot. Permission to be poor without being arrested.

This is what passes for leadership in a state run by Democrats too scared to challenge their developer donors.

I’ve seen what this does. I’ve taught students who show up hungry, exhausted, trying to study in the backseat of a car parked next to a lecture hall.

They carry the weight of an economy that treats them as disposable. And now these politicians—who criminalized “public camping” and gutted tenant protections—want to act like this bill is some great act of mercy?

No. This is a policy of surrender.

Instead of confronting power, they legislate around it. Instead of taxing the rich, they placate them.

They won’t fight for housing because they’re owned by the people profiting from this crisis.

This is what the slow, embarrassing collapse of the Democratic Party looks like—a party so captured by real estate donors and corporate developers that they have to humiliate themselves into offering legislation that says, “You can sleep in your car now—and we’ll call it compassion.”

We need a government that tells the truth. That housing is a right. That poverty is political. And that students deserve more than survival.

That’s why I’m running for Governor with the Green Party—because any system that lets students sleep in cars while billionaires sit on vacant units is not broken, it’s working exactly as designed.

And I’m not here to manage that system. I’m here to end it.

If you believe every student deserves a bed, a home, and a future—chip in now. Let’s build a movement that doesn’t ask for scraps. Let’s build one that takes back what’s ours.

Peace and Power,

Dr. Butch Ware
