The LA fires exposed everything that is broken
We will end the housing crisis
Friend,
Yesterday marked the one-year anniversary of the devastating Los Angeles fires.
In the first hours of response, every day people carried the city. Neighbors opened doors. Mutual aid groups moved food, water, clothes, medicine, and cash faster than any government agency.
Our campaign stood shoulder to shoulder with volunteers, making sure families had a place to sleep, even if it was only for a night.
For a moment, it seemed that care would lead, and people would come first.
Then the corporate vultures moved in.
As families were still sifting through the ash that used to be their homes, property buyers started circling with clipboards and cash offers. Corporate landlords saw desperation and pounced.
Offers came in fast and low, designed to take advantage of shock and grief.
Historically Black neighborhoods were decimated, and are now being gentrified.
Rents jumped 50%, then 100%, and in some cases 200% over market. Nearly 1,500 cases of illegal rent gouging were documented.
And yet a year later, only a handful ever faced charges.
This outcome is the result of a Democratic supermajority captured by ultra-wealthy interests who protect property and donors before people every single time.
A year later, many families still do not have what they need.
Rebuilding costs are through the roof, and at the same time, Trump’s regime targets immigrant workers who do the rebuilding.
Today, city and state officials offer kind words to the cameras, then return to protecting the same industries that turned disaster into opportunity.
We offer an entirely different vision.
Our comprehensive housing platform and statewide policies will end the housing crisis by funding social housing across California and expanding community land trusts to keep neighborhoods rooted.
We will decriminalize homelessness and commit to Housing First with stable homes as the starting point to rebuild and reclaim lives hijacked by corporate greed.
We will make disaster price-gouging a serious crime with real penalties and jail time.
We will enact statewide rent control, implement vacancy taxes, and close loopholes that let developers dodge affordable housing requirements.
The people of LA proved who they are when everything burned.
The question now is whether our government will keep serving corporate predators and ultra-wealthy donors or finally step up to serve the people who are rebuilding their city with their own hands.
Peace and Power,
Butch Ware
