ICE came to San Diego. The people sent them packing

Friends,

This is what political awakening looks like.

Last week, in San Diego, a group of everyday people saw ICE agents raiding two popular local restaurants.

And they didn’t look away.

In fact, neighbors ran toward the threat, not from it.

They gathered in the streets. They raised their voices. They shouted “Shame!” and cursed ICE agents until the van backed down and left.

These friends and neighbors did what establishment politicians never could—protect their own with nothing but courage and collective will.

That spirit, ordinary people standing shoulder to shoulder against injustice, is the foundation of what we’re building in this campaign.

A government rooted in solidarity. A California that defends its people, no matter their papers.

Our movement is dedicated to rejecting the entire system of cruelty, cowardice, and cover-up that both parties have used to dehumanize immigrants.

While ICE was officially created under George W. Bush, the foundations were laid long before.

It was the Clinton administration that first militarized the border, expanded immigrant detention, and stripped due process for countless families.

They built the legal architecture and enforcement mindset that made ICE possible.

What followed has been decades of bipartisan consensus that treat immigrant lives like political bargaining chips.

ICE raids are happening up and down the coast in California’s biggest cities this week. This is supposed to be a sanctuary state. We have a Democratic supermajority.

But are our so-called leaders putting their bodies on the line this week?

Are they out there blocking vans or shielding families?

Nope.

Just tweets and empty gestures about how “unacceptable” it all is.

Meanwhile, it’s the community that’s stepping up. Neighbors. Workers. Parents. Ordinary people with extraordinary courage.

And those are the people we want in our movement—because that’s what a winning movement looks like.

Under my governorship, California will not cooperate with ICE. No raids, no detention contracts, no collaboration with masked agents of fear.

We will not just resist ICE—we will dismantle its footprint in this state.

We will make California a sanctuary not in name only, but in law and practice. And we will lead the nation in showing what justice, dignity, and true solidarity look like.

The people of San Diego gave us a glimpse of that future. A future where neighbors link arms and tell empire: not here. Not on our watch.

Because when we say another world is possible, we mean it. And when we say California can lead the way, we know it starts with us.

Peace and Power,

Butch Ware
