California is not Kamala Harris’ consolation prize

Friends,

In a recent Politico article on whether Kamala Harris will jump into the governor’s race, a delegate from Shasta County cut to the heart it:

“We haven’t really heard from her on California issues since Trump’s inauguration. I feel like California isn’t a consolation prize.”

And she’s right.

But the political class doesn’t care.

Because here we are—after the collapse of the Biden presidency. After the passing of multiple Democratic members of Congress this year, which widened the GOP’s already razor-thin majority in the House and helped Trump’s disastrous budget pass by just one vote.

And still, the old Democratic guard clings to power—treating leadership like a lifetime appointment and ignoring the crisis we’re in.

So instead of reckoning with their failure, they’re trying to parachute Kamala Harris into the governor’s race.

California is not Kamala’s fallback plan.

It’s the fifth-largest economy in the world—and the only place with the power to turn the tide against rising fascism and corporate rule.

But that won’t happen with another establishment Democrat at the helm.

That won’t happen with a party that helped build the very system they claim to resist.

They backed the wars. Deregulated Wall Street. Celebrated the gig economy while unions were crushed.

And here in California, they’ve governed with a supermajority for over a decade—and still we have mass homelessness, unaffordable housing, polluted water, and poverty levels that rival anywhere else on the map.

This is a party in decay—propped up by donor-class consultants, hollow messaging, and a political machine that counts on public exhaustion to keep things exactly as they are.

If Harris jumps in, she’ll clear the field. That kind of vacuum is exactly how a MAGA Republican could sneak through the Top Two primary.

And in a low-turnout, fractured general election, they could even win.

Don’t think it can’t happen. That’s the danger of coronations in a moment that demands a movement.

There is one way to stop that: Butch Ware must be on the general election ballot.

As a real challenge. A realignment. A people-powered, anti-corporate campaign with the clarity and courage to meet this moment.

But we need to build now.

Solidarity,
